And the West is History

50 Years ago: Two teenagers are in satisfactory condition in Mercy Hospital today after their car rolled down a 585 foot embankment on Molas Pass at 3:50 p.m. Sunday. Stanley David Harris, 19, of Ridgway, driver of the car, has lacerations of the head and multiple abrasions, according to the report of Patrolman Al Hecht. Carol Higgins, 19, of Walsh, his passenger, has a broken right arm and multiple abrasions.

25 Years Ago: There’s no need to tell Durango High School’s Jay Johnson what’s at stake as he leads the Demon cross country team into Saturday’s state meet in Pueblo. Johnson is well aware, that as a senior and one of the three favorites, this is his final run at the cross country championship. ... “I’m really nervous,” said Johnson, who finished third at the state meet last year. “I’ve been nervous for this for about a month.”
