100 years ago: An advertisement read: “When traveling or in need of a comfortable bed and delicious wholesome meals. The Savoy is the hotel you should patronize. Everything up-to-date. Prompt service and courteous treatment to all guests. Charles Fleck – Proprietor”
75 years ago: “‘What’ll we do with him?’ cried the judge; and forthwith 700 people unanimously shouted, ‘Hang him!’ That was but one of numerous cases tried in the Kangaroo Court with the People of the Spanish Trails Fiesta versus all offenders. Estimates of the crowd witnessing the mock trials ran all the way from 700 to 1,000 people.”
50 years ago: This appeared in the section called Silverton News: “There seems to be a bit of fall in the air these days, or perhaps it’s just normal weather after the unusual heat we had a while back. At any rate, we have a lot of summer left (we hope).”
25 years ago: “The Navajo Nation has offered a $5,000 reward to help solve the 6-month-old murder of two Navajo sisters near Durango. The reward is for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murders of Velma and LaVerna Tsosie, who were found dead on Valentine’s Day near U.S. Highway 160 west of Durango.”
