And the West is History

50 years ago: Three young men are proof that the spirit of adventure is as alive today as it ever was. Bruno Egloff, Werner Muller and Richard Buechi, of Durnten, Switzerland, appeared in Durango early Wednesday morning. Most who saw them thought they were Colorado cowboys coming in from an elk camp. Instead, the three had come from Calgary, Canada – a trip which began in July. They were on their way to El Paso, Texas.

25 years ago: Skiers should be wearing big smiles today after the first significant snowstorm of the season dumped more than 4 inches of the white stuff at Purgatory-Durango Ski Resort. Purgatory spokesman Mike Smedley said it was still snowing on the slopes at 10 a.m. today, and more snow is in the forecast. Purgatory is currently shooting for a Nov. 27 opening day.
