And the West is History

“Claude Cunningham and Mrs. Marshall Karr are shown with La Plata County Commissioners Claude Deering, John Ferguson and Emmet Hott in this September 1964 photo taken on the new ramp to the front door of the county courthouse. The ramp is the first completion in the Renegade’s (handicapped persons) project of having architectural barriers removed from public buildings.”

100 years ago: “Phone your orders for fresh buttermilk to the San Juan Creamery. Delivered once a week anywhere in town.”

75 years ago: “Bill Adcock of the lower Florida Mesa took a fine, big turkey to Denver for the first annual Denver Turkey & Poultry Show. The bird won first places in several divisions and had been spotted by the judges as a very likely candidate for sweepstakes honors – when it dropped dead in its cage. A post-mortem revealed a blood cot near its heart probably caused the big tom’s death.”

50 years ago: “‘Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly, Tra La La La La’ rings out loud and clear in the Arts and Science building of Durango High School right now. The Deck the Halls part may be heard only at this time of year around Durango High School, but the Tra la la bit is an all-year sound.”

25 years ago: “Police confiscated 63 pounds of marijuana and about a half ounce of cocaine in what officials said is a ‘significant’ bust. Police said the street value of the marijuana is about $126,000 depending on the quality, which is being determined at a lab in Montrose.”
