“John Hensley of Leadville shouts encouragement to his dog team as they began the Pagosa Springs Into Action Sled Dog Races In February 1990. Over 60 racing teams competed. Hensley and his dogs took second place and a prize of $75 from a pot of over $5,000.”

100 years ago: SUNNYSIDE – “Bart Sease took about 100 head of his cattle to their summer range near the Mesa mountains.”

75 years ago: “A display of art chiefly featuring Indian subjects by the artist, Alfred Lee Rowell, is on exhibition at the sales rooms of the Western Colorado Power Company. The artist, whose complete works feature modelings, sculpturing, paintings, dioramas, portraits and landscapes has been at Mesa Verde for the past three years.”

50 years ago: “Denver and Rio Grande Western crews cleared the track to mile post 483, about a mile south of Needleton on their first attempt to clear the track to Silverton. State Agent Amos Cordova reports the crews did not run into as much snow as expected, but will probably hit the deepest snow between Needleton and Elk Park.”

25 years ago: “Durango could have a homeless shelter by October if everything falls into place. Southwest Community Resources hopes to move a house donated by the city of Durango onto city-owned land near Hilltop House. Volunteers of America would operate the shelter, which could house 20 people.”
