And the West is History

100 years ago: “100 head of cattle have been bought from the Dunham Ranch at Dolores and will be shipped to the Miller Ranch at Tiffany where they will be fattened for market. Livestock feeding and potato growing will be two of the leading industries of this basin, and they go hand in hand.”

75 years ago: “A little boy, ‘lost’ in Durango, either wouldn’t or couldn’t tell his name. When his mother was located, the reason became apparent. His name was about as long as his arm.”

50 years ago: “‘It’s a little unusual to have this much snow before Christmas,’ says W.W. (Billy) Davies, Durango’s veteran weather observer. ‘At least it hasn’t happened in the past several years.’ Davies by this morning had measured 27 inches since the first of November.”

25 years ago: The Gaslight Twin, 102 Fifth Street, was showing “The Bonfire of the Vanities” a movie starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith and Kim Cattrall.
