100 years ago: “A fire in the stone building on the corner of Main Avenue and 12th Street, formerly occupied by the San Juan Transfer Company from unknown origin, caused damage to several hundred dollars of household goods and furniture stored on the second floor and about $200 to the building.”
75 years ago: “The Hermosa Nurseries have just published one of the finest and most complete catalogs of flower, shrub, bulb and berry plants and fruit trees ever put out in this part of the country. This growing Durango business institution has its nurseries and greenhouses at Hermosa, 10 miles north of Durango, right in the middle of the famous ‘Hermosa Breeze’ where fruit failures are utterly unknown.”
50 years ago: “Name any kind of weather, and you could probably find it someplace in Colorado today. Basin ranchers and farmers looked out over snow-covered fields under mostly clear skies and give thanks for the welcome moisture.”
25 years ago: “Mercy Medical Center has taken steps to contain costs in order to avoid a projected $400,000 loss for the second year in a row. The measures include a freeze on filling vacant positions, elimination of discretionary administrative expenses, a freeze on all but essential capital expenditures, elimination of construction and remodeling and a reduction in hours worked.”
