And the West is History

100 years ago: “Richard Gifford, the high school student who had a bone in his right foot broken when he slipped on the steps at the school, will be laid up for some time. An X-ray picture was taken of the injured foot to determine the nature of the break.”

75 years ago: “Good news for La Plata County has arrived at the office of County Treasurer Thomas Mason in the form of a check from the D&RGW railroad company for $33,749.59 – as payment of the first half of the railroad’s 1938 taxes in this county.”

50 years ago: “Dwight E. Seits, charged by his wife on a Kansas warrant with assault with intent to commit murder, was released on his own recognizance. ... Seits two weeks ago posted a $5,000 cash bond, of which $4,000 was paid in silver dollars on a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution before U.S. Commissioner Paul S. Gemmill.”

25 years ago: “Durango police found more than 1,000 marijuana plants in a home at the Forest Lakes subdivision after an ‘alert’ Colorado State patrolman pulled over two speeding cars and became suspicious of the contents inside. Authorities said the operation had a revenue potential of $1 million.”
