75 years ago: Draft board officials announced that “only” 725 men from La Plata County signed up for active duty in the draft registration office.

50 Years Ago: Elliott H. Painter, former La Plata County sheriff, died at 87 in Fort Lyons. He played professional baseball for 13 years before moving to Durango, sharing the field with legendary hall-of-famer Ty Cobb while he was with the Detroit Tigers.

25 years ago: First National Bank of Durango announced the addition of Robert A. Lieb, founder of Durango Threadworks, to its board of directors.
