And the West is History

100 years ago: “Four of the handsomest men in the city stopped in an automobile in front of the Democrat office and on mandolin and guitar serenaded someone in the block with the latest popular and passionate music. We don’t know whether it was some good-looking girl upstairs or the hard-working editor who was the target for the dulcet strains of the musicians, but nobody came down from above.”

75 years ago: “A five-man crew of the International Harvester Company brought the company’s big refrigerator and dairy equipment demonstration truck to Durango and gave a practical demonstration.”

50 years ago: “This storm isn’t over yet, so says W.W. Davies, Durango’s unofficial weather prophet. However, it is not unusual to have heavy snowstorms in March. Last year was a dry spring, but at this time of the month. Durango had 1.16 inches of snow while there only has been .99 inches of snow this March. January and February of this year are way ahead of last year in snowfall, though.”

25 years ago: “The baseball lockout is over, patches of green are poking up in Durango lawns, and calving is under way at area ranches. If it seems like spring, that’s because it is.”
