100 years ago: An advertisement read, “Turkeys! Turkeys! 20 nice corn fed turkeys, all young. Delivered at your home at 19 cents per pound, dressed, or 15 cents alive. Order now.”
75 years ago: “This week was marked by a pre-holiday exodus to the city, as Denver, in its festive dress, beckoned from afar and several Durangoites, choosing the gay season of the year to combine business and pleasure, answered the call of the bright lights.”
50 years ago: “‘We’re overwhelmed with the wonderful way we were received,’ said Ray Duncan, president of Durango Ski Corp., after the opening weekend of Purgatory Ski area. Although there was no accurate tally kept of the number of skiers, Duncan believes between 800 and 900 persons skied at Purgatory.
25 years ago: “Lower unemployment numbers and fewer food stamp recipients mean 1991 federal funding for emergency food and shelter has been eliminated in La Plata County. ... Bureau of Labor statistics from January through September 1990 showed La Plata County dropped below the minimum threshold of 6.9 percent unemployment used to determine FEMA allocations. With unemployment numbers of at least 1,000 required, the 833 counted during the 10-month period in La Plata County were insufficient.”
