And the West is History

100 years ago: “As the first step in the replacing of the wooden pipeline of the city water system with steel pipe, City Manager A.F. Hood announced that within the next year, 1,000 feet of the wooden pipe will be taken out, and iron pipe will be put in its place for that distance. Eventually, the entire 11 miles of pipe will be laid in steel.”

75 years ago: “Among the braver souls who fared forth, undaunted by over a foot of new fallen snow on Christmas morning, were Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Wyman, who drove to Silverton to spend the day with her parents. Equipped with a couple of snow shovels and a determination to get through, they set out at 5 a.m. Christmas morning and blazed a trail through the snowy wasteland to the sky city where they found a welcome and a dinner that was well worth the effort expended in getting to it.”

50 years ago: “A monumental but uneventful traffic jam occurred at Purgatory when between 1,100 and 1,400 skiers and around 1,000 spectators turned out to take advantage of the good weather and the holiday weekend. The parking lot filled up early and cars then were parked along the road, creating just one traffic lane, almost as far as the highway.”

25 years ago: “The bull’s-eye will be on School District 9-R taxpayers in the spring of 1991 when it’s expected they will be asked to approve a bond issue, a historically unsuccessful and unpopular proposition, to raise the money necessary to take care of the district’s building needs for the next 20 years. It is estimated that a $15-20 million bound issue will be needed.”
