And the West is History

This picture appeared in the Dec. 19, 1963 Herald. The cutline read: “Tarnished by 70 years of service, the bell from the old city hall tower was lowered back to earth as demolition of the building continued. Cpt. Claude Park of Durango Fire Department points to the inscription on the bell which reads ‘McShane Bell Foundry, Baltimore, Md., 1889.’”

100 years ago: “The change of time in the arrival of the Souther train created havoc among the local hotel runners, porters and bellhops union. They weren’t advised.”

75 years ago: An advertisement for the Kiva theater read: “An advance notice. It’s coming Walt Disney’s ‘Ferdinand the Bull’ in technicolor.”

50 years ago: “Students return to the Fort Lewis College campus today to register for the winter trimester following Christmas vacation.”

25 years ago: “A Wyoming man will be La Plata County’s new chief planner. The commissioners unanimously chose Rusty Bonser. Born and raised on a ranch near Loveland, Colo., Bonser said that he’s anxious to get back to Colorado.”
