And the West is History

100 years ago: “Starving rodents reported to be ruining fruit trees in big tracts on the Florida, around Allison and up Montezuma Valley, in McElmo Canyon and Lake View districts – menace apple, peach, pear and cherry crops – snow is from 3 and 5 feet deep, and rabbits actually climb into the branches, gnaw bark off and even cut through pulpy trunks of smaller trees.”

75 years ago: “Gregory Sosten Quintana, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Quintana of Durango, left for the U.S. naval training station, San Diego, California.”

50 years ago: PAGOSA SPRINGS – “Four construction firms have submitted bids to San Juan Lumber Co. in Pagosa Springs to repair damage to one of the company’s large steel buildings which collapsed under heavy snow.”

25 years ago: “Heavy snow will be a big plus for Southwest Colorado ski areas as they gear up for Presidents Day weekend, one of the last big holidays of the season. Purgatory has 11 inches of new snow.”
