And the West is History

“With snow on the sidewalk and piled in the street, this was a 1917 winter scene in front of the Durango Drug Store and Savoy Hotel entrance. At the time, the drug store was operated by W.A. Libby who had moved the business here from Rico.”

100 years ago: SILVERTON – “Manger Joe Terry has begun active work toward rebuilding the buildings recently burned at the Sunnyside Mine. Regardless of the storm he was busy in an effort to open the trail to the mine so that supplies and building materials could be sent up.”

75 years ago: “When the lights in downtown Durango are turned on after the ‘blackout’ festivities will be featured by the Dutch band, playing several numbers, and by Santa Claus himself who will be greeting the people from an open car.”

50 years ago: “An old bell finds a new home ... a bell that once cleared the tracks for the last steam locomotive engine from Tercio will toll again. The bell, recently overhauled, will be used by Fort Lewis College.”

25 years ago: “In an unpublicized special meeting the La Plata Community Hospital board of directors voted to lease or sell the financially strapped hospital. The board also drew $495,000 in bond money to pay overdue bills from 90 down to 45 days late and cover December salaries and operating expenses – which depletes by a third the $1.6 million remaining from the $2.79 million in bonds issued a year ago.”
