And the West is History

100 years ago: “Twenty-six liquor shipments were made to Montezuma County during the month of March, an increase of 10 over the previous month.”

75 years ago: “The Durango City Council passed the anti-fireworks ordinance, which strictly prohibits the sale and shooting of fireworks within the Durango city limits. Penalty for violation of this ordinance would be a fine not exceeding $100 and a jail term not exceeding 50 days.”

50 years ago: “One hundred nineteen candidates for degrees have been announced by the Fort Lewis College Office of Admissions and Records. The list includes 97 Bachelor of Arts candidates, 19 Bachelor of Science candidates, and three Associate of Arts degree candidates.”

25 years ago: “The Durango Board of Education resurrected three frontrunners in its search for a new superintendent. The board’s first choice of Peter Wharton was thwarted last month when the Muskegon, Mich., superintendant withdrew March 21 because his district refused to release him from his contract without a legal tussle.”
