75 years ago: Durango residents “who were listening for the trial blast of the air-raid siren” were disappointed, along with members of the Defense Council and Louis Baudino and Wallace Gould, who arranged the amplifiers. They were “already busy working on other plans” and hoped to have a warning system worked out by Dec. 14, which would reach from the smelter to Animas City.
50 years ago: Fort Lewis College journalism students took a tour of The Durango Herald and examined the $8,000 camera, which was used to produce “negatives of each page of the newspaper for reproduction on the offset printing presses.”
25 years ago: The Durango community felt conflicted about the construction of a casino resort along U.S. Highway 550 near Bondad, proposed by the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.
