“D&SNGRR Engine No. 476 departs in this April 1989 photo from the Durango depot for a trail run to the Cascade Canyon Wye. It’s the first engine put to the test since a Feb. 10 fire destroyed the D&SNGRR historic roundhouse and damaged all six locomotives inside.”

100 years ago: “With both picture shows running in full blast to overflowing crowds, with a long six-reel program for a dime, the crowds of merry-makers on New Year’s night found ample entertainment at Redman Hall, where a prettily decorated hall, good music, and a select gathering danced until after midnight.”

75 years ago: “The prison break at the Colorado State Penitentiary, Cannon City, on Oct. 3 1929, which suggested the story of ‘Mutiny in the Big House’ which will play at the Durango theater, was the third and bloodiest in a series of six of the most ruthless prison riots in U.S. penal history.”

50 years ago: “The Durango High School marching band, all 125 members, have been invited to participate in the Portland, Ore., Rose Festival parade next June 12.”

25 years ago: “Durango residents commended the City Council during a public hearing for its proposed recycling plan that will cost almost $100,000 in start-up fees.”
