100 years ago: “After Jan. 1, 1916, the only ways in which intoxicating liquors may be procured in Colorado are these: for religious and sacramental purposes; for medicinal purposes; and for private home consumption.”

75 years ago: “United Press news sources reveal that the appropriation for the Vallecito project was increased to $400,000 in the Interior Department supply bill submitted to Congress. The appropriation for the dam previously had been set at $200,000 – about $300,000 less than completion of the project would require. This increase of $200,000, if passed by Congress, probably will enable the reclamation service to complete the Vallecito project without delay.”

50 years ago: “Word has been received in Durango of the unexpected death of George McLean in Ridgway. He was born in Coalcreek, Colo., a town near Canon City no longer in existence. He worked for the Denver and Rio Grande Southern Railroad for over 50 years and ended his career by running the last Galloping Goose in Ridgway. He was 78 years old at the time of his death.”

25 years ago: “The Board of Directors at Mercy Medical Center has named an acting president and chief executive officer. Bruce Hopkins has more than 20 years of experience in the health care industry. Hopkins replaces David Jacobsen, who resigned his duties so that he could spend more time with his family in Southern California.”
