75 years ago: “The national labor relations board has filed a complaint against the Sunnyside mining and milling company in Silverton. In part, the complaint alleges the Sunnyside company has warned and threatened its employees against participation in the activities of, or wearing any badge or symbol indicative of membership in the International Union of Mine, Mill & Smelter workers, Silverton Miner’s Union No. 26.”
50 years ago: “Six-hundred-fifty-six passengers on the D&RGW Silverton were delayed about 45 minutes in getting back to the depot in the evening when a gravel truck bogged down while working on the roadbed at 32nd Street and blocked the track. ... It took the engine from the first train to pull the truck out and clear the track.”
25 years ago: “The big tailings pile at the base of Smelter Mountain will be gone by the end of this week, and crews will immediately begin hauling away tailings from the second, smaller pile. Though the tailings will be gone, the cleanup operation at the site will continue for the next couple of months. The cleanup operation is a slow process because rocks and rubble have to be scooped up and hauled off instead of the sand-like material that is visible from U.S. Highway 160.”
