And the West is History

100 years ago: “Henry Campbell, of Bayfield, returned to his home with the new five-passenger Buick recently purchased from the local agent, Wm. Phelan.”

75 years ago: “Bill Hanson and John Vinas, of Hanson’s pool hall, are named defendants by a complaint filed in justice court, charging them with operating gambling tables. Bond for each was set at $500 and was furnished.”

50 years ago: An advertisement for Basin Rexall Drug, 863 Main Ave., read: “Treat yourself to the Million-dollar taste of Pangburn’s Pecan Millionaire$. One of America’s favorite chocolates. Fresh-shelled Pecans in creamy honey caramel lavishly covered with Pangburn’s pure Milk Chocolate. Truly a taste sensation. Fresh shipment just arrived.”

25 years ago: “Zoo operator Dick Ray says it is his own fault that a domesticated black bear got angry and attacked him while a television crew was filming the incident. Ray, 49, proprietor of the Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park and Art Gallery south of Pagosa Springs, was injured over the weekend. He said he suffered five puncture wounds in the attack but saved himself from further injury by playing dead.”
