100 years ago: IGNACIO – “While working near an irrigation ditch on his ranch 7 miles east of this city, Charles Pargin, about 41-years-old, was struck by lightning and instantly killed. The horse he was riding at the time also was killed by the bolt. Pargin, who was an extensive cattle raiser in this section, was well-known and prominent in this vicinity and San Juan affairs.”
75 years ago: “Although the government had contemplated abandoning the CCC camps on Reservoir Hill and on Pine River, telegrams stated that the camps would be retained at their present sites.”
50 years ago: “Injuries seem to be the order of the day. Sandra Hinsley, 1965 Colorado Mounted Ranger Queen, has just been released from Mercy hospital with a broken leg. Rumor has it that she fell off a bicycle and not a horse.”
25 years ago: “The Herald and the Durango Police Department still haven’t found out what unclaimed fortunes await us after an April 7 ABC-TV network special ‘Unclaimed Fortunes II’ listed the Herald and the Durango Police Reserve Fund among those who have fortunes awaiting them. A Herald letter inquiring about the fortune still hasn’t been answered.”
