And the West is History

100 years ago: “Miss Eulalie Pulliam was down from Electra Lake to buy supplies for the camp, spending the day in town with the intention of returning this morning.”

75 years ago: “The new Highway 160 Association formed in Durango will work toward the objective of promoting traffic over 160 by coordinating the advertising efforts of all the communities along the route.”

50 years ago: “In the same week as it handled new record crowds, Mesa Verde National Park, applied for $88,000 emergency funds to repair damage done by a downpour. The park for the first time had more than 4,000 visitors and 1,000 automobiles in a single day. Rain washed out a loop road into the park’s new Morefield Canyon campground and damaged many of the campsites.”

25 years ago: “Rep. Ben Campbell, D-Ignacio, said he can’t force any agency, state or federal, to do an environmental impact statement on the coal-methane drilling in the San Juan Basin. But efforts to determine the need of an area-wide EIS are continuing, Campbell said, and the nine agencies investigating that need are scheduled to meet to discuss their preliminary findings.”
