And the West is History

100 years ago: “The smelter reported the biggest day of the season, having unloaded 14 cars of ore from the mines of the Rico, La Plata and Silverton districts.”

75 years ago: “Nine CCC boys are expected to arrive at the Reservoir Hill camp. The boys are reported arriving from Telluride district. Sometime before July 15, a shipment of 100 is expected from Oklahoma. Boys from the local camp are occupied this week in cleaning up the Bayfield side camp for the reception of the summer contingent there.”

50 years ago: The Rocket, located 3 miles south on U.S. Highway 550-160, was showing “The Rounders” – starring Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda. The billing read, “The Wild West’s biggest fall guys go head over heels ... for a mean-eyed bronc ... and some bare-backed fillies!”

25 years ago: “The earth shook at 17th Street and West Second Avenue when lightning struck at the door of the righteous. A bolt toppled an 88-foot blue spruce that had stood in front of the First Southern Baptist Church more than 50 years.
