75 years ago: “Ask any school teacher or any of the students how long until school is out for the summer. You will get an answer in terms of hours and minutes instead of days and weeks.”

50 years ago: Commencement for Durango High School graduating seniors were to be held at Miller Junior High. Susan Antic, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Antic was valedictorian, and Mary Alice Pierce, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pierce, was salutatorian.

25 years ago: “Tailings removal is moving along at a record rate, and officials say that advances made since this year’s operation opened in April should put the effort back on schedule by the end of the month. The 14 trucks being used in the operation are making more than 280 trips a day between the tailings site and a clay pit where the contaminated material is being buried 1½ miles away in Bodo Canyon south of Durango.”
