100 years ago: “Montezuma auto owners are rapidly increasing in number. Last week a carload of machines were sold there, and all prospective buyers have not been captured by the salesmen.”
75 years ago: “‘More boys are needed in 4-H livestock clubs,’ says county agent C. M. Drage. ‘In La Plata County there exists many opportunities for ambitious boys to not only make a name for themselves but also to get started in a very profitable business.’ La Plata County is primarily a livestock county and the need for more and better livestock is being felt by many farmers and business men in the county.”
50 years ago: “Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Birket have opened the newest drive-in eating place in Durango area, the ‘Quickie Drive Up’ on U.S. Highway 160 a mile west of Durango. Mrs. Birket said that it is planned to develop a camp area for overnight tourists adjoining the business.”
25 years ago: Chimney Rock – “Evidence uncovered by Fort Lewis College Archaeology students at Chimney Rock ruins support a theory that a kiva, commonly known as the ‘Guard House,’ could have been used for ceremonial and religious purposes. Three small, delicate arrow-shaped stones were discovered by Fort Lewis students this month while excavating the kiva as part of a field study. The unearthing of the arrows is significant because the items appear to have broken off of bear fetish objects first uncovered in the kiva during an excavation in 1921.”
