100 years ago: “Only a few showed up in response to the invitation for volunteers to assist in forming an artificial skating pond near the brick yard. It is likely that a later date will be set, and it is certain that as soon as enough become acquainted with the project that there will be many volunteers.”
75 years ago: “The ‘premiere’ of Durango’s Christmas lighting decorations will be held Dec. 6. On that night, there will be a 15-minute ‘blackout’ in downtown Durango, between 7:30 and 7:45 p.m. Then at 7:45, all the lights will flash on together – the newly installed street decorations and the store window lights as well.”
50 years ago: “Molas Lake belongs to Silverton again for a price of $127.97. The town council received a communication from the law firm in Grand Junction which represented the town in the bankruptcy hearing of Stanley Baldwin, to whom the town had leased Molas Lake Park south of Silverton. The park, leased last year to Baldwin for development, was among the assets when Baldwin a few months later filed for bankruptcy.”
25 years ago: “A factory outlet shopping center is in the works for the old City Market property at 14th Street and Main Avenue. If the developers obtain leases from retailers and win approval of city planners, ‘The Marketplace’ could open in February, providing a retail anchor at the north end of the city’s business district and the first new development on Main Avenue in several years.”
