50 years ago: Youngsters gathered at the Santa Rita Neighborhood House on Monday afternoon to carve jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween Monday night. VISTA Worker Karna Clark, whom the children call “Miss Karna,” gave directions and assistance as the kids made a glorious mess and produced some spooky jack-o’-lanterns.
25 years ago: It may have been the chilly air (the overnight low was 24) or the final quarter of the lunar phase, but for whatever reasons Halloween activities on Main Avenue seemed relatively subdued compared to years past. “It was the smallest crowd I’ve ever seen,” Durango Police Lt. Dale Smith said of the ghouls, ghosts and caricatures who paraded the avenue during the annual Halloween bash. Smith estimated the crowd size at 2,000, and said overall “the crowd did well.”
