100 years ago: “The regular passenger on the Rio Grande Southern was delayed for a period of more than six hours, due to the derailment of a box car in Lost Canon and also a mud slide. Yesterday’s Southern was only delayed for a period of 40 minutes.”
75 years ago: “Romantic couples of Durango will be handicapped this weekend due to events beyond their control. Tonight is the tag end of Friday the 13th but still dangerous, and tomorrow night an eclipse of the moon is due.”
50 years ago: The following appeared in the Animas Valley News section: “The trees and shrubs, planted by Hyde Nursery are a great improvement to the grange yard. Two evergreen upright, four Chinese pfitzers as well as five Norway poplars for shade in the picnic area will add much to the appearance of the yard.”
25 years ago: “The city of Durango wouldn’t sell land adjacent to Brookside Park without an election. A state law requires the proposed sale of government land used as or held for parks to go to an election. The one-acre parcel at 2301 Main Ave., former site of Chamber of Commerce offices, is the subject of a rezone attempt that could lead to its sale to a Wendy’s fast-food franchise.”
