100 years ago: E. Best was accused of perjury for signing the name of another man in the express office for a shipment of whiskey. The defendant pleaded not guilty. He was placed under $250 bonds, which he had yet to pay.
75 years ago: Sheriff Bruce Sullivan of La Plata County received a phone call from the FBI, Denver office, Sunday night offering him a promotion to FBI duty. He declined the offer, and said that he is needed most in Durango, showing his loyalty to the local area.
50 Years Ago: Patrolman Al Hecht reported that Sheryl Lou Bartol, 17, struck a rock in her car, which had rolled onto the highway from a steep embankment at Carbon Junction. Her car careened off the right side of the road, struck another large rock, then flipped over. She suffered lacerations to her forehead and was taken to Mercy after the accident.
25 Years Ago: There was an elderly man with long white hair, dressed as Santa Claus, seen attempting to remove a manhole from the block of 3400 Main Ave. He looked suspicious.
