And the West is History

100 years ago: Sunnyside – “About 3 inches of snow fell, which improves the sleighing to quite an extent, as the last snow is beginning to melt very fast in some places, leaving the roads bare.”

75 years ago: “Fire did some damage to the Park School building before it was gotten under control by the Durango Fire Department. The flames apparently started from chimney sparks.”

50 years ago: “The Jan. 1 snow survey report shows the snow coverage in Southwest Colorado is currently 180 percent of normal and even ahead of last year at the same time. The snowpack in the Wolf Creek Pass area is 163 percent of normal.”

25 years ago: “Durango firefighters have sore muscles today after working through the weekend to hand-shovel deep, heavy snow off 380 fire hydrants. Drizzle followed nearly a foot of powder, turning the snow to mush.”
