100 years ago: “The commencement exercises of the Fort Lewis Agricultural School were held at Fort Lewis, 100 persons attending from Durango and surrounding country. ... Mr. G.F. Snyder, principal of the school, announced that the school would be continued next year and with better equipment than ever before.”

75 years ago: “First of its kind in Durango, a clinic for testing for tuberculosis will be held. Durango High School pupils will be tested. The tests are being made as part of the campaign for control of tuberculosis in the United States. These tests will be no more painful than a slight pin prick.”

50 years ago: “Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pinkerton, Durango, had a call this morning from their son Frank, Jr. in Anchorage, Alaska, center of Friday’s earthquake. Pinkerton said he, his wife and their four children were all right. ... Civil Defense officials listed casualty figures of 21 known dead and 83 missing and presumed dead from the earthquake.”

25 years ago: “The environmental impact of gas drilling in the HD Mountains near Bayfield could be the subject of an independent study if Amoco Production Co. decides to pay for its cost.”
