And the West is History

“Mrs. Cecilia Madonna is shown in this April 1966 photo as she arranged the lily plants for display at Schluter’s.”

100 years ago: “The sheriff, the undersheriff and City Marshall Garbanati made a raid on some houses down near the river. They found two quarts of whiskey that is said to have been brought here from Pagosa Springs.”

75 years ago: “The rotary entertainment committee has decided to vary the Easter program this year by giving all the kiddies of this section a real treat. The program will be a show at the Kiva Theater with a goodly number of treats for all. The only thing necessary to participate in this event is being under 14 years of age.”

50 years ago: “The Easter Lily that entered many Durango homes had a busy week. Each lily that was flown into Durango and delivered to the Schluter Floral shop from Denver was protected by a paper ‘sleeve.’ Then the lily plant was watered, decorated with a ribbon bow and placed in its own plastic container, different from the old foil wrapping used in former years.”

25 years ago: “After more than four months and another four-hour hearing, the La Plata County Board of Commissioners gave TL Roofing the green light for its controversial development of a piece of property off 32nd Street in Durango. ... TL Roofing, currently located at the intersection of 32nd Street and East Animas Drive, is planning to construct an office, warehouse and yard facility at the 4.1-acre site located on the north side of 32nd Street, just west of Holly Avenue.”
