And the West is History

“Walter F. Ficklin, summa cum laude graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree, and Milburn Lame, magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree, led the college graduating class on April 18, 1966. The wind blew, it rained and grew frigid as the exercises progressed, but few in the large crowd of parents, relatives and friends left before the end.”

100 years ago: “Sister Mary Luke of Mercy Hospital who is in southern California on a health-seeking expedition, writes she is deriving considerable benefit from the change of altitude.”

75 years ago: “Wanted – any number of men with some ability (but mostly willingness) to wing a hammer and a shovel. That is the plea of Pat Thomas, arena director for the Spanish Trails Fiesta. The back stretch of track at the Fiesta Grounds is in bad shape, fallen down and what not, and a community attempt to restore the track will get underway.”

50 years ago: “Almost the complete line of San Juan Basin weather was put on display when Fort Lewis College held its first commencement exercises as a fully accredited, degree-granting college.”

25 years ago: “Throw together a group of teachers, referees and lawyers with a bunch of donkeys and place them inside the Durango High School gym, and what do you get? Naturally, it’s the return of donkey basketball. ... All proceeds from the game will go to the DHS Athletic Facility Improvement Committee.”
