And the west is History

100 years ago: An advertisement read: “Red rubber boots are an economy for children. They save the child’s shoes and its health on rainy days. Size 7 to 11, $1.50. Sizes 11½ to 2, $1.75. McKinney’s.”

75 years ago: “L.M. Forsman, passenger agent for the Rio Grande in Durango, announced that the railroad would offer special train service to and from Silverton during this week’s Fine Arts contest ... The change was made to accommodate contestants and others interested in the Fine Arts.”

50 years ago: “The April issue of AOPA pilots’ magazine published by the aircraft owners and pilots’ association features a travel article on Durango and the Silverton train. Two color pictures of the railroad and two color pictures, one of Folsom Place grounds and the La Plata Mountains, and the other of the Purgatory ski area are by Lester Tinker of Durango. He also has a picture of Purgatory trail in the spring issue of Colorado Magazine.”

25 years ago: “Expounding his philosophy of local government and ending with a characteristic poetic tribute, Harrold Shipps began his one-year tenure as Durango mayor. Shipps, 68, who retired as chief of public services at the Fort Lewis College library, was elected unanimously by his fellow councilors. He served as mayor pro tem last year.”
