And the West is History

50 years ago: The first Veterans Day parade in several years will take place Friday at 10 a.m. It will start at Fifth and Main. The honored guest will be U.S. Sen. Peter Dominick (R-Colo.) who will speak following the 11 a.m. services at the War Memorial before City Hall. VFW Commander Bill Byrd expects four bands to participate, the Fort Lewis Raiders, Durango and Ignacio high school and Miller junior high. Among the marchers will be Eddie Box and Southern Ute Indians and the Jaycee Whistlers.

25 years ago: Old West antics in Durango are making national headlines. The Tuesday issue of The Wall Street Journal ran a front-page article on the recently High Country Shootout held during the Cowboy Poetry Gathering in October, and the word is spreading faster than ever. Slinging real six-shooters with live ammunition, 86 participants from as far away as Germany paid $44.40 apiece to gun down metal targets representing marauding bad guys.
