100 years ago: Henry Wommer, a well-known cattleman of the Pine River Valley, discovered that he had loss of sight in one eye.

75 years ago: The American Legion Auxiliary completed arrangements for the annual Poppy Day observance, when memorial poppies would be distributed throughout the city by auxiliary members.

50 years ago: A Cahone man was seriously injured “when his car overturned several times” on U.S. Highway 160 four miles north of Cortez. He was taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital to be treated for a concussion, broken bones and cuts.

25 years ago: A 17-year-old boy from Bayfield was reported to be in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Mercy Medical Center after he apparently fell asleep while driving his 1988 Toyota pickup truck east on U.S. Highway 160 and ran off the left side of the road. The vehicle hit a support and ditch embankment, which caused several fractures to the boy’s face, ribs and ankle.
