And the West is History

100 years ago: “O.P. Frary, of Bayfield, came in to eat Thanksgiving dinner, having ground up all the wheat near Bayfield in his mill there. He expects to leave for Arizona in a few days to spend the winter.”

75 years ago: “Folsom’s Pond, which is just around the bend on the Third Avenue road, is now ready for skating ... while the pond and its care is now largely in the hands of the skaters, the committee does make one request – that the skaters please not throw, tires, cans, or logs onto the surface of the pond.”

50 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled Dryside News. “Dryside has had a few flurries of snow this last week, and although it did not stay on the ground it reminds us that winter is coming.”

25 years ago: “Inmates’ complaints about routine strip searches, restricted visits with family and friends, and limited access to books and magazines, may compel a court-appointed attorney to file another federal lawsuit against La Plata County. ‘We’re looking at options of going back to federal court,’ said Beth Cooper, a local attorney who works for the law firm appointed by the U.S. District Court to oversee operations at the new county jail in Bodo Park, a facility built in 1987 after a lawsuit filed in 1982 charged that the inmates’ constitutional rights were violated because the former jail at the county courthouse was overcrowded.”
