100 years ago: The Durango Democrat printed a Christmas greeting message to its readers: “To its many friends and patrons The Democrat extends cordial holiday greetings having the largest circulation of any paper in this territory, we shall endeavor to make its columns more interesting each issue and a welcome visitor to hundreds of new homes during the coming year. May health, happiness and prosperity be the lot of every Democrat reader.”

75 years ago: Mrs. Idris Guire of Silverton stayed in Durango with her mother-in-law, Mrs. C.J. Guire, to receive treatment for her infected hand. Her hand was reported to be responding well to treatment.

50 years ago: Skies finally cleared and sunshine bounced off the waist-high snowdrifts, as Cortez residents emerged from one of the most severe winter storms they’d ever seen.

25 years ago: Durango Police Department received a report of a cat in the rafters at Smelter’s Coalroom, 801 Main Ave.
