75 years ago: “District Attorney James M. Noland said that he would ask for the death penalty for Jim Stephens, the slayer of Lynn Dean, Mancos marshal, when he is tried.”
50 years ago: “Durango is mentioned in an article on the Arboles Navajo Dam Dedication in the Oct. 11 issue of Grit Magazine. The headline is ‘Huge Free Barbeque,’ and the article says ‘7,500 people attended the dedication of a recreation area near Durango, given by state officials. The crowd consumed 6½ head of beef, 400 pounds (of) beans, 96 pounds (of) coffee, 5,000 rolls and 5,000 cups of ice cream.’”
25 years ago: “The chill winds and frosty mornings of October mark more than just the change from summer to fall, they also herald the approach of the year’s major hunting seasons. The statewide outlook for deer and elk is considered better than average this year, mostly because of two factors: the mild winters Colorado has enjoyed for the past several years and the resounding success of the antler point restriction, now entering its fourth year.”
