This picture appeared in the Nov. 26, 1963, Durango Herald. The cutline read: “Heralding the approach of Christmas, decorations along Main Avenue from Sixth Street to City Market in Durango were being erected.”

100 years ago: “The Denver and Pueblo papers arriving tonight will contain articles announcing the intention of the Rio Grande to construct the broad-gauge line connecting Durango with the San Luis Valley, verifying the Democrat’s report of yesterday morning. Thus you see the Democrat is from 12 to 32 hours in advance of all competition.”

75 years ago: “Fancy ironwork gates being made for the Fiesta grounds by Theodore Goeglein will be completed by April 1. The gates, one small one and five large ones, will require a total of 1½ tons of steel.”

50 years ago: “The city water commission submitted to the City Council a list of recommendations for improvements to the city water system that would cost an estimated $742,000. ... This would enable the city to provide the amount of water to supply a population of 14,700 people. Recommendations by the water commission are higher than the $656,000 improvement project proposed earlier.”

25 years ago: “A national retail company is preparing to toot its horn in Durango. Bugle Boy, which sells men’s, women’s and children’s contemporary sportswear, will be the fist tenant in The Marketplace factory outlet center if all goes as planned. The Marketplace is a factory outlet shopping center being developed on the old City Market site at 14th Street and Main Avenue.”
