100 years ago: “Miss Pollock found the gold watch which she lost two weeks ago at the doorstep, frozen in ice. After thawing it out, she found it was not injured in the least.”
75 years ago: “Mr. and Mrs. Boy Tayes returned on the bus from a buying trip to the east for the Graden Mercantile. Bob reports that the manufacturers are encouraged and enthusiastic over spring prospects Mr. and Mrs. Tayes encountered a lot of bad weather especially in Chicago; the main trouble seemed to be that the city didn’t know how to handle 14 inches of snow.”
50 years ago: “Fire of undetermined origin took off the air Durango’s local television station, KJFL-TV. The building on the mesa above Crestview and all of the equipment were lost, as volunteer firemen were delayed in reaching the scene by the winding, upgraded road made slippery by snow which fell earlier. ... The station, Durango’s first, began operation last November and provided about 2½ hours a day of local programs and films.”
25 years ago: “Rep. Ben Nighthorse Campbell said he is prepared to wage a tough fight over retiring U.S. Sen. Bill Armstrong’s seat, a race that will require raising at least $4 million in campaign funds whenever he can find them. ‘I haven’t had this much adrenaline pumping since I went to the Olympic Games,” said Campbell, a judo competitor in the 1964 Olympic Games, who was visiting Durango on his way to Washington D.C.”
