And the West is History

100 years ago: “Charley Ayers laid in a bunch of supplies and took them up to the Needleton mining district, where we understand he has a bunch of very promising claims. He intends to do his annual work there now.”

75 years ago: “With 210 days beginning Aug. 18 in which to complete the job Wood, Morgan & Burnett, Durango construction firm, started work in earnest on the new vehicle bridge over the Animas River on Highway 160 west of Graden’s Mill.”

50 years ago: “Durango had contracted to purchase a portable radar traffic control unit. The unit, costing $1,057, will be delivered in about three weeks. It is designed so that it may be used in any automobile. The purchase followed several discussions about the necessity to curb speeding in various sections of the city, but primarily on North Main Avenue. In many instances it is not possible for police to trail a suspected speeder long enough to establish a clocked speed because of traffic.”

25 years ago: “Criticism about vice-presidential candidate Dan Quayle’s military record has been set to music, with a song about his National Guard service being aired in Indiana and Colorado for the first time. Durango’s KIQX radio was the second station in the nation to broadcast the satirical tune.”
