And the West is History

100 years ago: “Dave Howe is to be Mayor Speer’s private secretary. We presume this little side issue, however, will not be allowed to interfere with Dave’s professional activities as a railroad lobbyist.”

75 years ago: “Fire of unknown origin Sunday night completely razed the Falfa Mercantile company store at Falfa, despite the efforts of a group of neighbors who rallied to fight the flames. Ownership of the store is in the name of Mrs. Jim Cummins.”

50 years ago: “Patrick J. Howley, who has been manager of the Grande Palace Restaurant since last August, will become the general manager in Durango for the Rio Grande Land Company, effective June 1, it was announced this week by R.C. Cavness, land company vice president. ”

25 years ago: “There’s (still) gold in them thar’ hills, but it’s going to stay there. Silverton’s miners weren’t surprised when officials of the Sunnyside gold mine announced Friday they would lay off 137 or 148 workers starting July 24, but the forewarnings hardly softened the blow when it came.”
