25 Years ago: PAGOSA SPRINGS – Ancient Forest Rescue on Thursday tipped off the press to a large protest and potential arrests at San Juan National Forest offices here on Friday. However, the eight protesters who showed up on the steps of the San Juan National Forest offices Friday said they weren’t willing to be arrested. Activists began gathering last week at Sandbench, northwest of Pagosa Springs, to protest the Forest Service timber sale of selected cut of old-growth forest by Stone Conainer Corp.

50 Years Ago: DURANGO – Roy Romer, 37, is the Democratic candidate for United States Senator. Romer is a native of Holly, Colo., and graduated from Holly high school in 1946. He was actively engaged in farming and ranching in Prowers county during his early years.
