And the West is History

100 years ago: “The fire near Elk Park is under control, according to word received here, but it is still burning. An entire mountain side of heavy spruce timber was damaged.”

75 years ago: “John Fleck of the C.O.D. Laundry is wearing a cast as big as a Russian boot to protect a little toe broken when he banged it against his daughter’s high chair.”

50 years ago: “Mr. and Mrs. Francis Davis of 32 La Plata Place leave for a 10-day trip to Hawaii. Davis won the trip from General Electric, and they fly from Denver to Honolulu and then to Maui island where they will stay for four days at the Sheraton Maui hotel. This hotel is situated on a cliff overlooking the ocean, and close to a native village. The group will tour the island of Hawaii before going to Honolulu where they will spend five days at the Kahola Hilton. There will be around 50 people on the tour.”

25 years ago: “For those befuddled by late-starting church services or football games, be reminded – America moved back in time. Most of the nation changed from Daylight Saving to Standard time. For those who remembered to set their clocks back one hour before going to bed, that meant an extra hour of sleep. For a few – police officers, bartenders and overnight telephone operators – the switch saddled them with an extra hour of nighttime duty.”
