And the West is History

100 years ago: “Train service on the Southern branch was demoralized by high water. The regular freight was unable to get into town being held up by a threatened bridge just outside the yard limits.”

75 years ago: “Men and boys hopeful of getting work on forest jobs this summer have scant chance of seeing their hopes fulfilled. Most of the trail working crews are retained from year to year. These are men experienced in the work required each spring, and it is only natural that they are re-employed in preference to inexperienced workers.”

50 years ago: EDINBURG, Scotland – “Pvt. Fred Leimbach of Cortez, headed for a honeymoon after a wedding made possible by obliging Army authorities. The bride was Jozica Kopopec, 22, a ballerina who was born in Yugoslavia but who, until the wedding in Edinburg’s register, was officially a stateless refugee. Lack of a passport for Jozica had hampered the couple’s plans to marry in West Germany. Fred, 20, is stationed in Munich.”

25 years ago: “Recycling is paying off for students at Florida Mesa Elementary School in more ways than one. ... With the money they raise, more than $300 now, students purchase land in Belize to maintain the rain forests.”
