100 years ago: “Sixteen cars of ore are to arrive from Silverton for the local plant. Shipments from that camp are rapidly increasing and the ore values average high.”
75 years ago: “With the stables at the Fiesta grounds now practically full and more entries due to arrive, the prospects for a fine program of race track events are growing brighter and brighter.”
50 years ago: “Hundreds of 4-Hers exhibited projects in the Columbine Room of the courthouse during the annual La Plata County exhibit day. In one of the largest project divisions, clothing, Margaret Johnston of Trysting Teens walked off with a blue ribbon and champion honors for her eighth-year entry.”
25 years ago: “Durango Parks and Recreation Director Richard Roskowinski said it was ‘safety first’ when he decided to yank some playground equipment from city parks. Two homemade swing sets, a swing seat shaped like a pony, asphalt beneath playground equipment – all were removed recently when Roskowinkski learned they were dangerous. Another piece, a merry-go-round at Schneider Park similar to ones that have amputated children’s fingers, was taken away last year.”
