100 years ago: The hog market had high activity during the morning, and was “under good demand,” with prices approximately a dime higher than average. Two “very fancy” loads of hogs arrived during the afternoon and were sold at top dollar.
75 years ago: Someone leaving for Pueblo was offering rides to those needing transportation. The Western Union office was advertising an employment opportunity as a messenger boy. There was a 1939 Plymouth sedan and a 1937 Hudson coupe for sale at the Jarvis Garage.
50 Years Ago: In Silverton, the San Juan County commissioners announced the county would pay for the murder trial of Thomas Julius Sergent, who shot and killed Milton and Mildred Moeller, a couple from Phoenix, Arizona, while vacationing in the San Juan Basin the previous September. It was only due to the widespread publicity caused by the murder that county officials reluctantly agreed to fund the trial.
25 years ago: It was an emotional time for community members whose loved ones were stationed in the Persian Gulf. Families and friends feared for the safety of the 61 men and women from Durango and Cortez who were on active duty. Of those who had been injured or killed, none was reported to be from Southwest Colorado.
