And the West is History

100 Years Ago: A sarcastic staff writer announced, “the weather maker was kinder to Animas City this morning. It was only 12 below.”

75 years ago: Mr. and Mrs. John Hedderman hosted an “attractive” dinner at their home for 24 guests.

50 Years Ago: Owner Leo Rickhoff announced that Roland Gaugh of St. Louis was hired as the new innkeeper of the Holiday Inn Durango, succeeding Jim Ware.

25 years ago: Dogs swarmed downtown Durango for canine-specific Snowdown events. A race through a cloverleaf-pattern of “overturned buckets covered with juicy, cooked meat” was featured, as event judges penalized the pooches that couldn’t resist temptation.
